Elder law focuses on the legal needs of the elderly. In addition to estate planning, elder law issues can include retirement, disability, veteran’s disability, taxes, financial planning, life insurance, health care, medical costs; Medi-Cal, Medicare, Social Security, and other government benefit programs; quality of life and independence, long-term care, end-of-life decisions, discrimination, and elder abuse.
Elder Abuse
Elder abuse refers to any knowing, intentional, or negligent act by a caregiver or any other person that causes harm, or a serious risk of harm, to a vulnerable adult. This may include physical abuse, sexual abuse, neglect, exploitation or financial abuse, emotional abuse, abandonment, or self-neglect.
